Can you tell us about yourself?

"Hi, my name is Molly Lowe and I teach at Lathrop Elementary School in Lathrop, California. I'm a third grade teacher and I've been here for almost five years."

Why did you start a career in education?

"Started in education back in college and got my degree in education but didn't teach for over 15 years and came back to teaching when I had two kids. I love working with children and helping them succeed and fostering their love of reading because reading is involved in everything we do"

If you could have any other job what would it be and why?

"If I had any other job, I probably be president of a company, um, and I would work collaboratively with my team in order to have success."

How are kids different now than 30 years ago?

"Kids are really different than they were 30 years ago. We could go outside and play by ourselves and come in when it was dark. Now parents are constantly, students are constantly under their parents' supervision and are on their playing tablets or electronic devices all the time. "

How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?

"Teaching's different. It changes. It's like a pendulum. It goes back and forth. Now we're back on standards based education and we'll be back to whole whole unit teaching again. It just swings back and forth. But the challenge is now that we face is definitely the use of technology in the classroom."

What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?

"Um, what I tell people about going into teaching right now, I tell them it's really challenging. Um, but there's a lot of benefits. Um, you know, you get to have time off to spend with your family. Um, you get holidays off. And so there are a lot of benefits, but it's hard work. Uh, but it can be very rewarding."

What is one thing you would change to help kids learn better?

"Uh, what's one thing that I would, um, change to help kids learn better? Um, I would take the use of technology away at home. They spend way too much time playing video games. Thank you for your time."
