The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway ran through the county, and several small towns along the tracks sprang up to take advantage of the influx of travelers. 5. Cedar County's earliest white settlers were German immigrants who arrived in the mid-1800s. They established several towns, including Hartington, which is still the county seat today.

6. In 1928, Cedar County held a contest to name the county's first airport. The winning name was "Cornfield Airport," as the airport was built on a former cornfield. Today, the airport has been expanded and modernized and is known as the Hartington Municipal Airport.

7. Cedar County was hit hard by the Great Depression. Many farmers lost their land and homes, and the county's population declined sharply. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) provided much-needed employment in the county, building roads and other infrastructure that still exists today.
