Falls County in Texas has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. Here are 7 interesting facts about this county's fascinating past:

1. The county was named after a waterfall: Falls County is named after the beautiful 35-foot waterfall on the Brazos River known as the falls of the Brazos. The waterfall was a popular spot for both Native Americans and settlers in the area.

2. Falls County was once part of a larger county: When Texas was still a part of Mexico, the area that is now Falls County was part of Robertson County. It wasn't until 1850 that Falls County was created, and it included parts of the surrounding counties of Limestone, Milam, and McLennan.

3. The Battle of Viesca: In 1835, a group of Texan rebels attacked the Mexican garrison at Viesca and won a decisive victory, securing control of the area. This battle is seen as one of the first major conflicts of the Texas Revolution, and it took place in what is now Falls County.

4. Falls County was a hub for cattle drives: In the late 1800s, Falls County was a popular stop on the historic Chisholm Trail. Cattle drives would stop in the town of Marlin to rest and resupply before continuing on their journey north.

5. A presidential assassination attempt: In 1887, President Grover Cleveland was on a hunting trip in Texas when he narrowly avoided an assassination attempt. The would-be assassin was chased by a posse and eventually caught in Falls County.

6. Loblolly Pines: In the late 1800s, a lumber company called the Waco Lumber Company built a narrow-gauge railway from Waco to Marlin to transport logs from the forests in the area. One of the types of trees they harvested was the loblolly pine, a type of pine tree that is not native to Texas.

7. The Marlin Mineral Springs: The Marlin Mineral Springs were a popular destination for health-seekers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The springs were believed to have healing properties, and people would come from all over the country to soak in the waters. The Marlin Mineral Springs hotel was once the largest wooden hotel in the state of Texas.

Falls County may be a small and often-overlooked area of Texas, but its history is full of fascinating stories and events. From battles and presidential assassination attempts to cattle drives and healing springs, there is a lot to explore and discover in this historic county.
