1. The county was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States and the commanding general of the Union armies during the American Civil War. It was formed on May 2, 1893, out of the Cherokee Outlet lands.

2. Following the land run of 1893, many settlers came to the county to take advantage of the free land being offered by the government. The population grew rapidly and in 1900, the census showed that there were 18,958 residents.

3. One of the most remarkable landmarks in the county is the Great Salt Plains Lake, located at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. This unique geological formation is one of only two places in the world where selenite crystals are found in such abundance. The lake is also a popular destination for bird watchers, as it is home to over 300 species of birds.

4. In the early 1900s, the discovery of oil transformed the economy of Grant County. The county soon became one of the leading oil-producing regions in Oklahoma and contributed significantly to the state's overall oil production.

5. During World War II, Grant County was the site of a German prisoner of war camp that held nearly 4,000 prisoners. The camp was located near the town of Medford and was considered one of the largest POW camps in the United States at the time.

6. Grant County has produced several notable politicians and public figures over the years, including former Oklahoma Governor Bill Anoatubby and U.S. Congressman J.C. Watts.

7. The county is also known for its impressive architecture, with many buildings from the early 1900s still standing today. One of the most significant examples is the Grant County Courthouse, built in 1910. The courthouse is a Beaux-Arts style building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
