1. The county was named after Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens, who fought in numerous battles including Cowpens and Eutaw Springs.

2. In the late 1800s, Pickens County was known for its textile industry and had several thriving mills. One of the most notable was the Alice Manufacturing Company, which produced cotton fabrics and employed hundreds of people.

3. The area around the town of Easley was once called "the Golden Strip" due to its fertile soil and agricultural successes. Peaches and other fruits were major crops in the region.

4. Clemson University, one of the nation's top public universities, is located in Pickens County. The school was founded in 1889 as an agriculture college and was named after Thomas Green Clemson, a politician and scientist who bequeathed his estate to the state of South Carolina for the establishment of such an institution.

5. In the early 1900s, the county was home to several thriving marble quarries. The Pickens Marble Company produced high-quality marble used in buildings across the country, including the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol.

6. During World War II, the county saw an influx of workers as several factories in the area began producing military equipment. The Westinghouse Electric Corporation plant in Liberty produced bomb sights and radar equipment for the military.

7. In 1973, the community of Six Mile in Pickens County became the site of the infamous "Scream in Six Mile" incident. An alleged Bigfoot sighting and subsequent encounter with law enforcement officers drew national attention and remains a source of controversy and fascination today.
