1. Birthplace of Andrew Jackson: The 7th President of the United States was born in the Waxhaws region of Rowan County in 1767. Although his exact birthplace is disputed, a small log cabin in what is now the town of Jackson, NC is believed to be the most likely location.

2. One of the first counties formed in North Carolina: Rowan County was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. It was one of the first counties created in North Carolina and was named in honor of Matthew Rowan, who served as acting governor of North Carolina from 1753-54.

3. Served as the center of government during the Revolutionary War: In the early years of the Revolutionary War, Rowan County served as the center of government for North Carolina. The first session of the North Carolina Provincial Congress was held in Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County, in August 1774.

4. Site of a major Civil War battle: The Battle of Rowan County, also known as the Battle of Salisbury, took place on April 12, 1865, just days before the end of the Civil War. Confederate General Wade Hampton attacked Union forces in Salisbury, resulting in a decisive Confederate victory.

5. Home to one of the oldest colleges in the country: Catawba College, located in Salisbury, was founded in 1851 and is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. The college has a rich history and has produced many notable alumni, including former governors and U.S. senators.

6. Birthplace of Cheerwine: Cheerwine, a popular cherry-flavored soft drink, was created in Salisbury by L.D. Peeler in 1917. The soda has since become a North Carolina favorite and is often served at festivals and events throughout the state.
