1. Battle of Gainesville
On August 18, 1862, the town of Gainesville, located just a few miles east of Lindsay, played host to a battle during the Civil War. Confederate forces had been occupying the town, but Union forces arrived to try and push them out. The battle lasted several hours and resulted in around 100 casualties.

2. Opening of the Chisholm Trail
In the late 19th century, the Chisholm Trail was the main route for cattle drives from Texas to Kansas. The trail began near San Antonio and passed through Cooke County, including near Lindsay. In the 1880s, tensions between cattle ranchers and farmers in Cooke County boiled over into a violent conflict known as the Cooke County War.
