1. The Battle of Marais des Cygnes: On May 19, 1858, a group of proslavery militia attacked a group of free-state emigrants at Trading Post, just a few miles north of Paola. In what became known as the Battle of Marais des Cygnes, 5 men were killed and 5 more were captured and later executed. The incident further fueled tensions between proslavery and antislavery factions in Kansas.

2. Paola City Founding: In 1857, the town of Paola was founded by Dr. Horace Greeley, a famous newspaper editor and abolitionist. Greeley named the town after his friend and colleague, Paolo Monti, an Italian patriot who fought for the unification of Italy. Paola quickly grew as a hub for the surrounding agricultural industry.

3. Dennis Banks and The Longest Walk: In 1978, Native American activist Dennis Banks led a group of Native Americans on a cross-country protest march against several pieces of legislation that threatened tribal sovereignty. The march ended in Washington D.C. after several months, with Banks and fellow activists meeting with President Jimmy Carter.

4. The Great Flood of 1951: In July of 1951, Paola and several other Kansas towns were devastated by heavy rainfall that resulted in historic flooding. More than 17 inches of rain fell in just a few days, causing many homes and businesses to be destroyed. The flood remains one of the worst natural disasters in Kansas history.
