Tuscarora, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Schuylkill County. With a population of just over 700 people, it may seem like there isn't a whole lot of history to be found in this area. However, there are several noteworthy historical events that have taken place nearby. Here are seven such events:

1. The Molly Maguires - The Molly Maguires were a secret society of Irish miners who fought against the poor working conditions and low wages they faced in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. Many of the members were arrested and convicted of various crimes, including murder. The trials and executions of several Molly Maguires took place in nearby Pottsville during the 1870s.

2. Knox Mine Disaster - On January 22, 1959, the Knox Mine Disaster took place near nearby Pittston. Water from an abandoned mine flooded the shaft where 69 miners were working, trapping them underground. Twelve of the miners were able to escape, but the other 57 died in the disaster.

3. Anthracite Coal Strike - In 1902, thousands of coal miners in Pennsylvania went on strike, demanding better pay and working conditions. The strike lasted for several months and resulted in violence and the involvement of the National Guard. President Theodore Roosevelt eventually intervened and helped broker a deal between the miners and the coal companies.

4. Molly Stark Hospital - During World War II, a hospital was built in nearby Tamaqua to treat wounded soldiers. The hospital was named after Molly Stark, a Revolutionary War heroine who fought alongside her husband in the Battle of Bennington. The hospital treated thousands of soldiers during the war.

5. The Great Shamokin Fire - In 1901, the town of Shamokin, located just east of Tuscarora, was hit by a devastating fire. The blaze destroyed over 300 buildings and left thousands homeless. The fire was reportedly started by a young boy playing with matches.

6. The Schuylkill River Canal - The Schuylkill River Canal was built in the 1820s to transport coal and other goods from the mines in northern Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. The canal passed through nearby Port Clinton and provided an important means of transportation for several decades before being replaced by railroads.

7. Pottsville Maroons - The Pottsville Maroons were a professional football team that played in the National Football League from 1925-1928. The team won the NFL championship in 1925, but controversy over a game played against the famed Notre Dame football team led to the Maroons' eventual expulsion from the league.

These are just a few of the many historical events that have taken place near Tuscarora, Pennsylvania. Despite being a small town, the area has a rich and varied history that is worthy of exploration.
