2. On April 28, 1865, just days after the Civil War ended, President Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was killed in a shootout in Virginia. Despite being one of the most infamous events in American history, Kentucky played a role in the aftermath of Booth's death, as one of the soldiers who participated in his capture was a Kentucky native.

3. In 1797, Kentucky legislator and future governor James Garrard signed a bill establishing Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. The university played an important role in the early history of Kentucky, and has produced a number of notable alumni, including two U.S. vice presidents.

4. On April 28, 1952, a devastating tornado swept through the town of New Castle, Kentucky, destroying more than 50 homes and killing six people. The tornado was one of several that hit the state that day, part of a larger outbreak that caused widespread destruction in the Midwest and southern United States.

5. In 2009, Kentucky celebrated "Kentucky Unbridled Spirit Day" on April 28th, in honor of the state's cultural and historical heritage. The day was marked by a variety of events, including performances by the Louisville Ballet and the University of Kentucky Dance Ensemble, and a tour of historic sites in the state.
