1. In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company was founded. It was the first railroad company in the United States and the first company to receive a charter from the state of Maryland.

2. In 1910, the first public radio broadcast took place in Maryland. The broadcast was made by station WJZ in Baltimore and featured a performance by Enrico Caruso.

3. In 1966, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Marshall was born in Baltimore and is perhaps best known for his work as an attorney in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education.

4. In 1984, the Baltimore Colts football team moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. The move was controversial, and many fans in Maryland were dismayed by the loss of their beloved team.

5. In 2007, the Maryland General Assembly overrode a veto by Governor Robert Ehrlich and passed legislation to increase the state's minimum wage. The move made Maryland one of the first states in the country to have a minimum wage above the federal level.
