1. In 1816, the Maryland House of Delegates voted against the establishment of the Bank of the United States, despite the support of the state's governor and senator. This decision reflected Maryland's growing disillusionment with a centralized federal government and its financial institutions.

2. On March 10, 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early launched a surprise attack on Union forces outside of Rutherford's Farm in Frederick County, Maryland. The Union troops were quickly overrun, but managed to regroup and launch a successful counterattack that halted the Confederate advance.

3. In 1913, suffragettes from across Maryland gathered in Baltimore to lobby state legislators for the right to vote. Although their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, the suffrage movement in Maryland continued to gain momentum and helped pave the way for the passage of the 19th Amendment.

4. On March 10, 1941, the U.S. military awarded its first contract for a helicopter to the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Bridgeport, Connecticut. However, it was not until several years later that the helicopter became a widely-used tool in military and civilian applications.

5. In 1998, Maryland became the first state in the country to enact a law requiring all new homes to be equipped with sprinkler systems. This legislation was championed by fire safety advocates and has since been adopted by several other states as well.
