Can you tell us about yourself?

“Hello, my name is Zach Stosius. I am a specials counselor at Camden KAPS in Camden, NJ. Special Counselor – I teach from K - 8th I teach Health and Character Building and from 9th to 12th graders I teach Spanish, Resume Building, and Seminar at the end of the day.”

Why did you start a career in education?

“I started a career in education, for one, I coach wrestling so it did help me out, make me available so I can coach wrestling at the local high school down the road. I also started in education just so I can work with kids. Help them where they needed to be helped so they can achieve their goals down the road.”

If you could have any other job what would it be and why?

“My dream job would be to work with any sports in Philadelphia or any sports in general. I went to Lockhaven for Sports Administration. So, I did move down to the Jersey area because I thought I had more of an opportunity to work for a sports team. But I have been working for the school system now and couldn’t ask for anything better.”

How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?

“How is teaching different now than 30 years ago, I say teaching is different now, it is more structured. I think classrooms are more organized to meet the students needs especially in our school setting. We have to make sure that we have a safe environment for these kids every day. Every kid is treating the same way. We are consistent with the kids as well.”

What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?

“If I was to tell someone who was thinking about getting into the teaching industry, the main thing is just to be organized, have everything laid out, know what you are going to do. Your lesson plans…try to keep up to date with your lesson plans. Try to know what you are going to do that week; try to know what you are going to do the next week. But my main observation would be as a new teacher would be to be organized and don’t get flustered. Keep being yourself, do what you’ve been doing, and it will all get better.”

What is one thing you would change to help kids learn better?

“To help kids learn better, I think we …its more structural. So, I think the class is more structured for the students needs. I think each student has a different learning mentality so whatever we can do to help each student individual to meet their goals. I think we work closer with each student just so they can meet their goals of graduation or getting out of this school and going back to their regular school.”
