The primary mission of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office is to provide a safe and secure environment for the residents and visitors of Laurel County through department programs and community policing efforts. This goal will only be accomplished through a mutually cooperative relationship between the Sheriff's Office, the other Laurel County law enforcement agencies, and the community it serves. By working together, we can maintain the peace, provide safety and security for our citizens, and reduce crime and/or the fear of crime.
Laurel County Sheriff John Root was elected by the people in 2010 to serve as Laurel County Sheriff promising the citizens of Laurel County to wage “war on drugs”. His office continues to emphasize drug investigations, and all tips are investigated. Sheriff Root pledges to continue this fight. Additionally, Sheriff Root promised to keep the public informed about what his office is doing and does by publishing activities on a Laurel County Sheriff's Office Facebook page that reports arrests, weather conditions, road construction alerts, crime tips, and educational programs his office is involved with. Press releases are sent to media outlets in a timely manner reporting sheriff’s office activities. Sheriff Root's accomplishments include: continuing the “war on drugs”, a narcotics unit, a K-9 unit, an accident/crime scene investigation unit, a special response team with regional capabilities, a school resource officer and a public information officer. Additionally, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office has purchased new cruisers, new 9 mm duty weapons, 9 mm off duty weapons and rifles, new body armor, a state of the art total station used to reconstruct accidents and crime scenes, and computers in cruisers giving deputies direct 911 access.
