Woodson County was organized in 1855 and named in honor of Daniel Woodson, who was secretary of the Territory, and for some time, acting Governor after the resignation of Governor Shannon in 1856. Woodson County encompasses 504 square miles of the most awe-inspiring beauty, for nature lovers, photographers and artists, alike. Our county is located in the southeastern portion of Kansas and is the gateway to the crossed-timbered area of the Chautauqua Hills and to the grasslands of the Flint Hills, located to the west.
