Can you tell us about yourself?

Yes. My name is Ms. Harris. I teach third grade at Victor Ornelas Elementary School in Garden City, Kansas. I have taught here. This is my ninth year here in Garden City.

Why did you start a career in education?

So, question number two is asking me why teaching. Well, that is easy. I have always loved kids. I have always wanted to inspire kids.

If you could have any other job what would it be and why?

. If I could have any other job in the world, I think I would want to be a travel agent. I cannot really see myself leaving teaching, but anytime I go on a vacation, I am always the one who plans it. I think kind of that is my type a personality. So, I'd love to be a travel agent

How are kids different now than 30 years ago?

teaching now versus 30 years ago. Well, I have not been in teaching that long to know exactly the differences, but I do know that kids now and teaching now are different kids now have social media.

They have a way to interact with the world that's does not face to face. And so then when we are face-to-face and we are in the classroom and we're learning it sometimes can be more challenging for students to think about, well, how do I talk to this person? That's sitting next to me instead of someone who's on my phone, on social media.

How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?

Teaching now from 30 years ago, it feels like it is a lot faster pace. We have so many things that we cover every day. We have high expectations for our students, and we do also have a lot of technology to help us out. And a lot of ways, I love it.

What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?

Anyone wanting to become a teacher, my advice for you is go for it. If you have a heart for kids and you want to make a difference in their life, then just do it.

Do not listen to what society says. Teaching is rewarding.
