5. In 1970, the Kennebec River became the site of a major environmental disaster when a tanker truck carrying 5,000 gallons of gasoline crashed on Route 201, spilling its contents into the river. The resulting explosion and fire killed four people and caused extensive damage to the local ecosystem, leading to renewed efforts to protect Maine's natural resources.
