1. On April 10, 1644, during the English Civil War, a battle took place in St. Mary's County between the English and the local Native American tribe, the Yaocomaco. This battle is known as the Battle of the Severn and resulted in the defeat of the Yaocomaco, leading to their assimilation into the English colonial society.

5. In 1951, Maryland was the first state in the nation to adopt a statewide minimum wage law. The law required employers to pay at least 75 cents per hour, which was more than the federal minimum wage at the time. This law paved the way for other states to adopt similar policies to protect workers' rights.
