1. Detroit Tigers' First Game

On April 11, 1901, the Detroit Tigers took to the field for their very first game in franchise history. The game was against the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Tigers came out victorious with a score of 14-13.

2. Michigan Inaugurates First Female Governor

On April 11, 2019, Michigan inaugurated its first female governor, Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015 before being elected as governor.

3. Michigan's First Telephone Exchange

On April 11, 1879, Michigan's first telephone exchange was installed in Grand Rapids. The exchange, run by the Michigan Telephone Company, initially had just 50 subscribers.

4. Tart Cherry Capital of the World

Traverse City, Michigan, is known as the "Tart Cherry Capital of the World." Each year, the city hosts a National Cherry Festival, which draws in visitors from all over the country.

5. Passing of Nation's Longest-Serving Congressman

On April 11, 2012, Michigan's John Dingell became the nation's longest-serving congressman, surpassing the previous record of 57 years, held by Robert Bryd of West Virginia. Dingell served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 59 years before retiring in 2015.
