1. In 1865, the Dakota Territory was established by an act of Congress. This event led to the eventual formation of the states of North Dakota and South Dakota.

2. In 1877, a group of Sioux Indians surrendered to General George Crook at Camp Robinson in present-day Crawford, Nebraska. This marked the end of the Sioux War of 1876-77.

3. In 1892, a massive fire broke out in Yankton, South Dakota, destroying many homes and businesses. Despite the destruction, no one was killed in the blaze.

4. In 1939, the South Dakota State Capitol building was dedicated in Pierre. The building took ten years to construct and is made of locally sourced materials, including South Dakota sandstone.

5. In 2018, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed a bill into law that reversed a ban on pit bull ownership in the state. The ban had been in place since 1987.
