2. On April 14, 1912, the luxury passenger liner Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 people. While Nebraska may seem far removed from the disaster, many Nebraskans lost loved ones who were onboard the ship.

3. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's first chancellor, Samuel Avery, was born on April 14, 1822. Avery served as chancellor from 1891 to 1899 and oversaw the university's expansion and modernization during his tenure.

4. On April 14, 1986, a violent tornado outbreak struck parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas, killing 5 people and causing extensive damage. The most destructive tornado touched down in the town of Grand Island, Nebraska, where it destroyed dozens of homes and injured over 200 people.
