1. In 1861, the Confederate government authorized the formation of the Orphan Brigade, a unit of volunteers from Kentucky who fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War. This brigade was made up of soldiers who had lost their fathers or were orphans themselves, and served with distinction in numerous battles.

2. On April 15, 1934, the notorious criminal John Dillinger was captured in Tucson, Arizona. While Dillinger was not a native Kentuckian, his criminal exploits had gained notoriety across the country, and his capture was viewed as a significant victory for law enforcement.

3. In 1947, a massive tornado outbreak hit Kentucky and several other states, causing widespread damage and killing over 200 people. This event, known as the "April 15th Tornado Outbreak," remains one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in US history.

4. On April 15, 1958, the Kentucky Derby Museum opened its doors to the public. Located at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, the museum showcases the history and traditions of the famous horse race and the sport of horse racing as a whole.

5. In 2013, the Bluegrass State Games Foundation announced that the University of Kentucky's Commonwealth Stadium would host the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Bluegrass State Games. This annual event is a week-long festival featuring a wide range of athletic competitions, from basketball and soccer to archery and martial arts.
