1. In 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured in Irwinville, Georgia. Davis was on the run after the fall of Richmond, Virginia, and was eventually caught in Georgia. He was imprisoned in Fort Monroe, Virginia, for two years before being released.

2. In 1935, the Center College baseball team played their first game at Tom Beasley Field in Danville. The Colonels defeated the University of Kentucky 4-1, marking the beginning of a long-standing baseball rivalry between the two schools.

3. In 1941, the Kentucky State Police was officially created by the Kentucky General Assembly. The first troopers were trained at the school for patrolmen in Richmond and initially employed horseback and motorcycle patrols.

4. In 1968, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his final speech at Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. King was assassinated the next day while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.

5. In 2005, the Louisville Cardinals basketball team won their first NCAA championship, defeating the University of Illinois 75-68. The victory was notable for being head coach Rick Pitino's first national championship and for the performance of Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Francisco Garcia.
