1. In 1862, the Battle of Perryville took place in Boyle County, Kentucky, just south of the Indiana border. Several Indiana regiments, including the 26th Indiana Infantry, fought in this battle as part of the Union Army.

2. In 1898, the Spanish-American War began. Many Indiana soldiers and sailors served in this conflict, including the USS Indiana, a battleship named in honor of the state.

3. In 1934, the World's Fair opened in Chicago. Many Indiana companies and organizations participated in the fair, showcasing their products and services to the world.

4. In 1962, astronaut John Glenn visited Indianapolis as part of a nationwide tour following his historic flight in space the previous year. He spoke at several events and was welcomed by thousands of Hoosiers.

5. In 1986, the Indianapolis 500 was held on May 25th, the latest date in its history. This was due to a change in the schedule of the United States Auto Club (USAC), which oversaw the race at the time.
