1. On April 3, 1902, the town of Tulsa was officially incorporated. Prior to this date, the area had been known as Tulsa Indian Territory and was inhabited by various Native American tribes.

2. In 1936, Oklahoma native and legendary athlete Jim Thorpe was inducted into the inaugural class of the National Football League Hall of Fame on April 3. Thorpe was one of the most versatile athletes of his time, and he was also an Olympic gold medalist in both the pentathlon and decathlon.

3. On April 3, 1979, the Oklahoma City Thunder, formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, played their first NBA game in the state of Oklahoma. The Thunder moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 and have since become a beloved team in the state.

4. On April 3, 1933, Oklahoma Governor William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray signed the state's first sales tax laws into effect. The sales tax, which was set at 2%, was intended to help alleviate some of the state's economic woes during the Great Depression.

5. In 1963, a tornado outbreak struck several states including Oklahoma on April 3. The strongest tornado, an F4, hit the town of Big Spring and claimed the lives of 18 people. The outbreak resulted in a total of 32 deaths and millions of dollars in damages.
