1. In 1862, the Battle of Shiloh began in Tennessee, but many Hoosiers fought bravely in this battle. In total, 20 regiments from Indiana were present at this bloody engagement in the heart of the Civil War.

2. On April 5, 1899, Indiana's first state park was established at McCormick's Creek. This beautiful park has plenty of rugged hills, waterfalls, and scenic vistas that still attract visitors from all over the state and beyond.

3. Kurt Vonnegut, one of Indiana's most iconic literary figures, was born on April 5, 1922, in Indianapolis. This famous author and countercultural commentator wrote many classic books, including "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle," and "Breakfast of Champions."

4. In 1946, the state of Indiana adopted the first version of the Hoosier Basketball Tournament, which would eventually become the famed Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Basketball Tournament. This annual tournament is still widely followed and celebrated by fans throughout the state.

5. On April 5, 2012, Indiana became the first state in the Midwest to pass a "right-to-work" law, which banned labor unions from requiring employees to pay union dues or fees as a condition of employment. This controversial law was met with both support and opposition from various groups throughout the state.
