1. In 1847, the Kentucky State Capitol building burned down. The fire, which was caused by a candle accidentally left burning in the State Library, destroyed most of the building and many important state documents.

2. In 1908, the first Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The horse named "Stone Street" won the race with a time of 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

3. In 1928, Harland Sanders opened his first restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. The restaurant, called Sanders Court & Cafe, became famous for its fried chicken and eventually evolved into the international fast-food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

4. In 1973, the Louisville Zoo opened to the public for the first time. Today, the zoo is home to over 1,700 animals and welcomes nearly a million visitors each year.

5. In 1997, the Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky was designated as a National Geological Area. The area, which is known for its unique rock formations and scenic beauty, attracts hikers, rock climbers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
