Louisiana was named after King Louis XIV of France, and April 5, 1682, marks the day when French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, claimed the Mississippi River and all its surrounding areas for France. This event helped pave the way for colonizing the Louisiana Territory, which later became the state of Louisiana.

2. In 1764, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, Antonio de Ulloa, arrived in the territory and assumed control. This sparked outrage among the French population, and on April 5, 1768, a rebellion began known as the "Revolt of the Louisiana Creoles." The uprising lasted for several months before being quelled by Spanish forces.

3. Louisiana played a significant role in the Civil War, and on April 5, 1862, the Battle of Shiloh began in Tennessee. Many Louisiana soldiers fought in this battle, which was one of the bloodiest of the war, with over 23,000 casualties on both sides.

4. April 5, 1899, marks the birth of jazz musician and composer John Casimir Dos Passos, better known as Johnny Wiggs. Wiggs was a pioneer of the New Orleans jazz scene and played with some of the greats, including Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory.

5. On April 5, 1933, Louisiana became the first state to establish an official state song. "Give Me Louisiana" was written by Doralice Fontane and arranged by Dr. John C. Egan. It remains a beloved tune in the state to this day.
