1. On April 9, 1859, George Q. Cannon was ordained as an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cannon later became a prominent leader in the church and served as a member of the First Presidency.

2. In 1865, the first issue of the Deseret News Weekly was published on April 9. The Deseret News is the oldest continuously published daily newspaper in Utah and is owned by the LDS Church.

3. On April 9, 1932, the first radio broadcast was made from the top of the Salt Lake Temple in honor of the birthday of LDS Church President Heber J. Grant. The broadcast was heard by thousands of listeners throughout Utah and surrounding states.

4. In 1943, Utah Governor Herbert Maw signed a bill into law on April 9 that authorized the creation of the Utah State Park system. The first state park, Utah's first national monument, was established in 1923 when President Harding designated Zion Canyon as a National Monument.

5. On April 9, 2007, Salt Lake City hosted the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game between the Florida Gators and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Florida won the game, 84-75, to claim their second consecutive NCAA championship.
