1. Oregon became a state on August 1, 1859. After years of debate and discussion, Congress finally approved Oregon's statehood on February 14, 1859. However, it wasn't until August 1 of that same year that the state was officially admitted to the Union.

Mercedes Deiz was appointed to the Multnomah County Circuit Court, making her the first African American woman to be appointed to a judgeship in Oregon. 5. The first university in Oregon was founded on August 1, 1868. Established by a group of Methodists, Willamette University is located in Salem and is the oldest university in the state. Over the years, the university has expanded its offerings and now includes multiple colleges and graduate programs.
