1. In 1851, the United States Army established a fort on the banks of the Rogue River in what is now southern Oregon. Fort Lane was established to maintain peace between local Native American Tribes and American settlers in the area.
2. On August 12, 1898, the first Oregon State Fair was held in Salem. The fairgrounds, which are still in use today, were located on 20 acres of land donated by the city.
3. In 1933, the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The lodge was built as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression and is now a National Historic Landmark.
4. On August 12, 1954, the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River began operation. The dam provides hydroelectric power to the Pacific Northwest and also helps regulate the flow of the river for navigation and irrigation.
5. In 1981, the Tillamook Forest Center opened in the Coastal Range of western Oregon. The center is dedicated to educating visitors about the importance of forests and features interactive exhibits, a theater, and hiking trails.
