1. In 1862, the Battle of Cedar Mountain took place in Culpeper County, Virginia during the American Civil War. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson defeated Union General Nathaniel Banks in a hard-fought battle.

2. On August 14, 1908, the Virginia General Assembly created the Virginia State Corporation Commission, which regulates the state's utilities, insurance, and other industries. The SCC is still in operation today.

3. The Virginia War Museum in Newport News officially opened on August 14, 1978. The museum features exhibits on the state's military history, from the American Revolution to the present day.

4. In 2003, Tropical Storm Henri made landfall near Virginia Beach, causing widespread flooding and power outages throughout the region. Despite its relatively weak status, Henri caused over $200 million in damages.

5. On August 14, 2007, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck near Richmond, Virginia. While the quake caused no major damage or injuries, it was still notable as one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in the area.
