1. In 1812, Spanish forces led by General Joaquín de Arredondo defeated a group of Texan revolutionaries at the Battle of Medina. It resulted in one of the bloodiest battles in Texas history, with an estimated 1,500 Texans killed.

2. In 1836, the Texas revolutionary army under the leadership of General Sam Houston defeated the Mexican army under the command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. This victory secured Texas' independence from Mexico.

3. In 1846, the United States declared war on Mexico. This was a result of tensions between the two nations over border disputes and annexation of Texas. The war lasted two years and resulted in the United States acquiring more than half of Mexico's territory.

4. In 1907, the Galveston hurricane made landfall on the Texas coast. It killed an estimated 8,000 people and remains the deadliest natural disaster in United States history.

5. In 1969, the Woodstock Festival took place in New York. While not a Texas event, it's worth noting that one of the performers, Janis Joplin, was a Texan who grew up in Port Arthur. Her performance at Woodstock helped solidify her place in music history.
