1. On August 18, 1942, South Dakota's Black Hills became home to one of the largest military training bases in the United States during World War II. Camp Rapid was established near Rapid City and served as an important site for training troops before they were deployed overseas.

2. In 1956, the Oahe Dam was completed on the Missouri River in South Dakota. This impressive infrastructure project is one of the largest earthen dams in the world and spans over 9,000 feet. The resulting Oahe Reservoir now provides hydroelectric power, irrigation, and recreation opportunities for South Dakota and beyond.

3. August 18 is also the birthday of South Dakota native, Tom Brokaw. The journalist and author grew up in Yankton and went on to become a celebrated news anchor for NBC. He is perhaps best known for his coverage of major events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

4. On this day in 1937, the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota reached a depth of over 6,800 feet, making it the deepest gold mine in North America. The mine operated for over 125 years and produced over 40 million ounces of gold throughout its history.

5. In 1862, the Dakota War, also known as the Sioux Uprising, began in southwestern Minnesota. Many Dakota Sioux had been displaced from their traditional lands and were facing starvation when tensions boiled over. The conflict would eventually spread to parts of South Dakota and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of settlers and Native Americans before ultimately being quelled by U.S. forces.
