1. In 1925, the City of Sturgis held its first annual motorcycle rally. Today, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the largest motorcycle rally in the world, with over 500,000 attendees.

2. On August 20, 1959, the Black Hills Passion Play had its grand opening in Spearfish. The Passion Play, which has been performed for over 80 years, depicts the life and death of Jesus Christ.

3. In 1972, President Richard Nixon visited Mount Rushmore and gave a speech in which he praised the monument and its sculptor, Gutzon Borglum.

4. On August 20, 1976, the Badlands National Park was expanded to its current size of over 244,000 acres. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs.

5. In 1990, the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation announced plans to create a Native American university on the site of the memorial. While the university has not been built, the memorial continues to be a symbol of Native American culture and history.
