1. In 1778, the Battle of the Cooch's Bridge took place in Delaware. Although the battle did not occur in Maryland, it was significant for being the only battle of the American Revolution fought in Delaware.
2. On August 23, 1835, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opened its Washington Branch, which connected Baltimore and Washington, D.C. This branch helped to establish the B&O Railroad as the first common carrier railway in the United States, and also helped connect the two major cities in the Mid-Atlantic region.
3. On August 23, 1927, the United States Navy's airship USS Shenandoah crashed near Ava, Ohio, killing 14 of the 42 crew members on board. The Shenandoah was on a tour of the Midwest when it encountered severe turbulence and high winds, causing it to break apart in mid-air.
4. In 1958, the Annapolis Convention Center was dedicated in Annapolis, Maryland. This multi-purpose facility hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including conferences, trade shows, and concerts.
5. On August 23, 1977, the infamous "D.C. Sniper" John Allen Muhammad was born. In October 2002, Muhammad and his accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the D.C. area with a series of sniper attacks that killed 10 people and injured several others. Muhammad was ultimately arrested and convicted for his role in the killings, and was executed by lethal injection in 2009.
