1. In 1864, the Battle of Jonesboro took place in Clayton County, Georgia as part of the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. The battle was one of the most important ones fought during the campaign and it resulted in a Union victory. Several Tennessee regiments fought in the battle, including the 35th, 36th, and 42nd Infantry Units.

2. In 1985, a series of violent thunderstorms hit Tennessee, causing widespread damage and flooding. The storms, which occurred on August 23 and 24, resulted in the deaths of six people and caused over $300 million in property damage.

3. On August 24, 1929, the historic hotel The Peabody in Memphis opened its doors for the first time. The hotel quickly became one of the most famous landmarks in the city and a popular tourist attraction. Among the hotel's most famous features are the Peabody Ducks, a group of live ducks that march into the hotel's lobby every day.

4. In 1968, the Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago. Several Tennessee politicians, including Senators Albert Gore, Sr. and Howard Baker, Jr., played prominent roles in the convention. The event was marked by protests and violence, including clashes between protesters and police.

5. On August 24, 1941, the US Army established Camp Forrest in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The camp was used as a training facility for soldiers during World War II and remained in operation until 1946. After the war, many of the buildings were dismantled or sold off and some of the land was eventually turned over to Tennessee's state government. Today, the site is home to a state park and several other recreational areas.
