1. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was officially adopted, giving women the right to vote. Ohio was the 6th state to ratify the amendment, on June 16, 1919.
2. On August 26, 1971, the Ohio State University football team played their first game at Ohio Stadium, after previously playing at Ohio Field since 1916. The Buckeyes defeated University of Michigan 20-9 in the dedication game.
3. On this day in 1789, Ohio was officially recognized as a territory of the United States, under the Northwest Ordinance. It established a process for new states to be admitted to the Union, and prohibited slavery in the territory.
4. In 1943, the Cleveland Rams played their first preseason game at Cleveland Stadium. The Rams would go on to win the NFL championship that year, before moving to Los Angeles in 1946.
5. On August 26, 2002, Akron native and astronaut Judith Resnik was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Resnik was one of the seven crew members killed in the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986.
