1. On August 28, 1929, the first flight across the United States using only instruments was completed in 24 hours and 56 minutes by pilot James B. Mollison, from Long Island, New York to Los Angeles, California. 2. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. 3. On August 28, 1862, Colonel Kit Carson led a successful campaign against the Navajo people in what has become known as the Canyon de Chelly Campaign. The campaign resulted in the forced relocation of thousands of Navajo people to a reservation in eastern New Mexico where they were held captive under harsh conditions for several years.

4. In 1917, a tornado struck the city of Clovis, killing 17 people and causing extensive damage to buildings and homes. This disaster was one of the deadliest tornadoes in New Mexico's history and had a lasting impact on the community.

On August 28, 1964, the New Mexico Museum of Space History was opened in Alamogordo, preserving the state's rich history in space exploration and providing a platform for research and education in the field.
