1. Nebraska became the 37th state in the United States on March 1, 1867. However, it wasn't until August 30 of that same year that President Andrew Johnson signed the official statehood proclamation.
2. In 1905, Nebraska passed a law that made it illegal to spit on sidewalks or public buildings. Offenders could be fined up to $20 (equivalent to around $570 today).
3. On August 30, 1913, the Omaha Municipal Airport (now known as Eppley Airfield) opened for business. It was one of the first airports in the country to offer scheduled passenger service.
4. In 1927, a group of boys from Ashland, Nebraska discovered a massive stego-saurus skeleton on a nearby farm. The find attracted worldwide attention and was eventually donated to the University of Nebraska, where it is on display to this day.
5. The Nebraska State Fair has been held annually since 1868. While the fair now takes place in Grand Island, it was originally held in Omaha. August 30, 2019 marked the opening of the 150th Nebraska State Fair.
