3. In 1920, legendary baseball player and Los Angeles native Ted Williams was born. Williams played his entire 19-year career with the Boston Red Sox and is widely considered one of the greatest hitters in baseball history.

4. In 1976, the first Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train began service between MacArthur and Fremont stations in the San Francisco Bay Area. BART has since become a critical transit system for the Bay Area, serving millions of passengers annually across five counties.

5. In 1997, the California Highway Patrol arrested Tupac Shakur in connection with a September 7th shooting in Las Vegas. Shakur died from his wounds six days later, making August 31, 1997 the tragic end of a storied music career and marking one of the most infamous moments in hip hop history.
