1. On August 4, 1895, a group of prospectors discovered gold in the Judith Mountains, which led to a gold rush in the area. The town of Maiden was established and became a thriving mining community until the gold deposits were exhausted in the early 1900s. Today, visitors can still see the remnants of the old mining town.

2. In 1910, on August 4, a devastating forest fire swept through parts of Montana, including Glacier National Park. The fire destroyed over 3 million acres of forest and killed 85 people. It remains one of the worst forest fires in the state's history.

3. On August 4, 1918, Montanan soldier Private Lloyd Ramsey was killed in action during World War I. Ramsey was the first Montanan to die in combat during the war, and his sacrifice is honored with a memorial in his hometown of Great Falls.
