1. In 1913, the city of Topeka experienced one of its worst floods on record when the Kansas River overflowed its banks. Floodwaters caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure throughout the city.

2. On December 13, 1862, the First Kansas Colored Infantry was organized in Fort Scott, Kansas. This regiment was one of the first all-Black regiments to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.

3. In 1937, a devastating natural gas explosion occurred in Hutchinson, Kansas, killing 8 people and injuring over 100 others. The explosion was caused by a leak in the gas mains beneath the city.

4. Wichita's first high school, Wichita High School, was established on December 13, 1876. The school was later renamed Wichita East High School and still operates today.

5. On December 13, 1910, the state of Kansas ratified the 17th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which allowed for the direct election of U.S. senators by the people of each state.
