1. In 1866, the Yankton Sioux Treaty was signed in Fort Sully, SD. This treaty established a reservation for the Yankton Sioux Tribe in southeastern South Dakota.
2. On December 13, 1890, a tragedy occurred at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. US troops opened fire on a group of Native Americans, killing approximately 300 men, women, and children in what is now known as the Wounded Knee Massacre.
3. In 1918, South Dakota became the first state to ratify the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. This followed a similar victory in the Dakota Territory in 1883.
4. December 13, 1948, marks the day when the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site was established near Wall, SD. This site preserves and interprets the history of one of America's most powerful nuclear deterrents, the Minuteman missile, that was deployed during the Cold War.
5. In 2010, the South Dakota State Historical Society announced the discovery of a previously unknown photograph of famous Wild West showman William F. Cody, aka "Buffalo Bill." The photo was taken in 1905 in Hot Springs, SD, and had been hidden away in a scrapbook for over a century.
