1. On December 14, 1721, the Tuscarora War officially ended with the signing of a peace treaty between the Tuscarora tribe and the colony of South Carolina. The war had begun in 1711 and resulted in the loss of thousands of lives on both sides.
2. In 1775, the Second Provincial Congress of South Carolina met in Charleston on December 14 to organize military forces to fight in the American Revolution. The congress also established a naval committee to oversee the building of ships to aid in the fight for independence.
3. On December 14, 1832, South Carolina became the first state to pass an ordinance of nullification, which declared federal tariffs on imported goods unconstitutional. The ordinance was ultimately unsuccessful and led to the Nullification Crisis of 1832-1833.
4. The Silver Comet passenger train made its final run through South Carolina on December 14, 1968. The train had been in operation since 1947 and was a popular means of transportation for many residents of the state before being retired.
5. On December 14, 1996, the Hunley submarine was successfully raised from the ocean floor off the coast of South Carolina. The Confederate submarine had sunk in 1864 during the Civil War and was the first submarine in history to sink an enemy ship in combat. Its recovery was a major historic event for the state.
