1. On December 22, 1818, writer Edwin McMasters Stanton was born in Steubenville, Ohio. Stanton would later become a prominent figure in Tennessee history as the U.S. Secretary of War during the Civil War and as an advocate for the rights of African Americans.

2. The Battle of Stones River, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, began on December 31, 1862, but it was on December 22 of that year that Confederate General Braxton Bragg ordered his troops to begin their march towards Murfreesboro, where the battle would take place.

3. On December 22, 1870, Tennessee's first African American state senator, Sampson Keeble, was sworn into office. Keeble, who represented Davidson County, was one of only a handful of African Americans to hold elected office in the state during the Reconstruction era.

4. In 1927, on December 22, Nashville experienced what is still the deadliest tornado in Tennessee history. The tornado, which hit in the early evening, killed at least 71 people and destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses.

5. Finally, on December 22, 1978, the Nashville-based band from the Christian music genre, MercyMe was formed. The band, which includes lead vocalist Bart Millard, has released numerous hit songs and albums over the years and has won multiple Dove Awards and Grammy Awards.
