1. On December 22, 1818, writer Edwin McMasters Stanton was born in Steubenville, Ohio. Stanton would later become a prominent figure in Tennessee history as the U.S. Secretary of War during the Civil War and as an advocate for the rights of African Americans.
2. The Battle of Stones River, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, began on December 31, 1862, but it was on December 22 of that year that Confederate General Braxton Bragg ordered his troops to begin their march towards Murfreesboro, where the battle would take place.
