1. Nevada became a state on October 31, 1864, but December 25, 1864, was the first Christmas that the state celebrated as a member of the Union.

2. Christmas Day of 1871 was marked by a massive fire that destroyed much of the business district of Virginia City, one of the state's most prosperous mining towns. The fire started in a saloon and quickly spread, destroying more than 100 buildings and leaving thousands homeless.

3. In 1893, the first electric streetcar line in Reno opened on December 25. It ran from the state capitol building to the University of Nevada campus, and was a major technological advancement for the city.

4. On Christmas Day of 1936, the U.S. government broke ground on the Hoover Dam project. The dam, located on the border between Arizona and Nevada, was a massive undertaking that provided much-needed jobs during the Great Depression and still stands as a marvel of engineering today.

5. In 1945, Nevada became the site of the first above-ground nuclear test, named Trinity, on July 16. While this event did not occur on December 25, it greatly impacted the state's history and brought many changes to the area, including widespread radiation exposure and increased scrutiny from the federal government.
