3. In 1835, the Second Seminole War began when Osceola and his Seminole warriors ambushed and killed Major Francis Dade and his troops. The conflict lasted for seven years and was the longest and most costly American Indian War in United States history.

4. On this day in 1974, the band Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at the Lakeland Civic Center. The concert was recorded and later released as a live album, "One More from the Road".

5. In 1988, the landmark Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami was destroyed by a fire. The theater, which opened in 1927, had hosted performances from luminaries such as Alfred Hitchcock, Julie Harris, and Jessica Tandy. It was eventually rebuilt and reopened in 1992, but closed permanently in 2006 due to financial troubles.
