1. On December 29, 1864, the Civil War Battle of Buck Head Creek took place. Confederate troops were able to defend their position against Union forces, resulting in a victory for the South.

2. On December 29, 1890, Georgia politician Thomas E. Watson was elected to the United States Senate. Watson was known for his strong populist views and was a vocal opponent of big business interests in government.

3. In 1913, on December 29, the Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust Company was chartered. The bank would eventually become part of the SunTrust Bank empire, which is still a major financial institution in the state today.

4. On December 29, 1928, Governor Lamartine Hardman established the Georgia State Game and Fish Commission, one of the first such organizations in the South. The commission promoted conservation and outdoor recreation throughout the state.

5. On December 29, 1983, the Georgia Dome opened its doors for the first time. The massive venue quickly became a hub for sports and entertainment events in Atlanta, hosting everything from Super Bowls to concerts by major musical acts. Though the dome was eventually replaced by the newer Mercedes-Benz Stadium, it remains an iconic part of Atlanta's landscape.
