1. In 1890, the first shipment of fresh pineapples from Hawaii arrived in San Francisco. Pineapple became a significant crop for Hawaii and a major industry throughout the 20th century.

2. In 1940, the United States government imposed martial law in Hawaii following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The martial law lasted until October of 1944.

3. On December 29, 1949, the Hawaii constitution was approved by President Harry S. Truman, officially declaring Hawaii a US state.

4. In 1960, Hawaii's Hilo Observatory detected the first successful recording of the formation of an active volcanic island in modern history. The new island was later named Surtsey and is located off the southern coast of Iceland.

5. On December 29, 2020, Hawaii became the last US state to officially certify its election results, thus concluding the 2020 United States presidential election.
